Member Saturday: From Matrons to Muncy | Women at Eastern State

Members only. Registration required. Hybrid.

While most of Eastern State’s 85,000 prisoners were men, the penitentiary held nearly 1,000 women in its early years. Women were incarcerated at Eastern State from 1831 until 1923 when any remaining female prisoners were transferred to the newly established Muncy prison.

Join Ciara Sullivan (Supervisor, Evening Education Programs) for a conversation about women at the penitentiary. Learn more about what life was like for female prisoners and the staff members known as “matrons” who were appointed to oversee them.

This event is free for all members. Capacity is limited, and advance registration is required. Members, reserve free tickets here.
