Eastern State’s iconic architecture has attracted visitors for nearly 200 years. Preserving and maintaining the penitentiary’s 10-acre complex is a never-ending project, and now members can be a part of it. Try your hand at preserving one of Eastern State’s historic cellblocks!

First, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, Liz Trumbull, Manager of Historic Preservation, and Sally Elk, President and CEO, will share insights about historic masonry and the long-term strategy for maintaining Eastern State as a stabilized ruin. Then, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm, stay and get your hands dirty! Members will be invited to help replace mortar between the stones of one of Eastern State’s historic walls.

This hands-on masonry workshop will take place in person, rain or shine. Be sure to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, long pants, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Eastern State will provide all other tools and safety equipment. Space is limited.

This event is free for all members. Reserve free tickets online* or call 215-236-5111 x224.
