October is Archives Month, and Eastern State is opening its rarely seen collection to celebrate. Eastern State Archivist, Erica Harman, will present highlights of the collection, including the penitentiary’s original front door, a massive and imposing metal and wooden structure as well as historic locks and keys used by guards to enter and leave each day.
Members will learn the story of the original gate’s removal and the addition of the secure double door in the mid-20th century. After viewing the collection, members will tour the historic site’s entrance with an expert tour guide and view the architectural updates.
