Member Saturday: Oscar Wilde and Incarcerated Creators

February 19, 2022, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Member Saturday: Oscar Wilde and Incarcerated Creators

Members only. Registration required. Virtual.

Isolated within the walls of a cell, many prisoners focus on creative pursuits to process their experience or to pass time while incarcerated. One notable example is Oscar Wilde, the Irish poet and playwright, who during his incarceration wrote several works including The Ballad of Reading Gaol.

Join Connor Feeney, Eastern State Membership Specialist, and Andrew White, Volunteer Coordinator at The Rosenbach, for a thought-provoking discussion on incarcerated artists including Oscar Wilde and people who served time at Eastern State.

Andrew White trains and manages tour guides and creates on-site programs for The Rosenbach. He presents on topics as diverse as Shakespeare, William Blake, Beatrix Potter, Langston Hughes, and the Harlem Renaissance, and has added multiple Queer topics to The Rosenbach’s program roster. His Rosen-blog articles on Harry Belafonte’s thank you notes to poet Marianne Moore, Marlene Dietrich’s Lesbian love letters, Alexander Dumas's color, folk horror, tea, and shoes at The Rosenbach can be read here. Andrew created the volunteer-led Rare Books Department tour at the Parkway Central Library, the Philadelphia Free Library’s main branch, and his work on the tour of Parkway Central itself was named Philly’s Best Cultural Tour by Philadelphia Magazine in 2019.  Andrew lives in Philadelphia and is a published horror writer, with short stories in Ideomancer and Black Static.
