Every year, thousands of Philadelphians move through the city’s prisons and jails. Many of these individuals need medical attention for both short-term and chronic physical and mental health conditions. Providing healthcare behind bars comes with a unique set of challenges.

Hear from Dr. Bruce Herdman (Chief of Medical Operations for the Philadelphia Department of Prisons) about the current state of healthcare in Philadelphia’s city jails and what he has learned during his decades of working to facilitate healthcare for incarcerated people. Then, members attending in person will tour Eastern State’s historic hospital block.
