Greg Cowper’s artist installation, Specimen, has delighted Eastern State visitors for over ten years. Inspired by an unknown 1880s prisoner who collected 18 species of butterflies, moths, and one cicada from his small exercise yard, Specimen features more than 500 insects and other critters all collected from inside the walls of the penitentiary’s ten-acre complex.

Meet Greg Cowper, Curatorial Assistant in the Entomology Department at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, learn more about his thought-provoking installation, and search for new species as you explore the various methods Greg has used to capture specimens for his ever-growing cabinet of curiosities.
