Justice 101: The History of Women in Prison and the Legacy of Freedom Fighters
Free. Online and in person.
Advanced registration required.
Registration link forthcoming.
This program explores the complex and often untold history of women in the American prison system, focusing not only on the evolution of female incarceration but also on the legacy of women who fought for freedom and justice from behind bars. These women, often labeled as criminals, have been pivotal in shaping civil rights, social justice, and prison reform discourse.
The discussion will bring together historians, criminologists, advocates, and descendants of these women freedom fighters to trace key moments in the history of women's incarceration. Topics will include the establishment of the first women's prisons, the unique gender-specific conditions within these institutions, and the intersection of race, class, and gender in shaping the experiences of incarcerated women.
A significant focus will be on the stories of women who, despite their imprisonment, became symbols of resistance and catalysts for change. From early suffragists jailed for their activism to civil rights leaders and modern-day advocates for prison reform, these women have challenged the oppressive structures that sought to silence them. Their courage and resilience continue to inspire movements for justice and equality today.
The panel will also address ongoing issues faced by women in prison, such as access to healthcare, motherhood, and family separation, and the disproportionate impact of mass incarceration on women of color. By examining the history and contributions of women freedom fighters within the prison system, this session aims to provide a deeper understanding of women's challenges and the powerful legacies they have left behind.
