November 21, 2020, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Member Saturday: Indigenous People and Incarceration

Members only. Registration required.

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, researcher Annie Anderson will discuss the history of Native American people incarcerated at the penitentiary, Eastern State’s relationship with the local Native American community, and how the justice system impacts Indigenous communities today.

Annie Anderson is an American Studies PhD student at Rutgers-Newark. She worked at Eastern State Penitentiary for 9 years doing research on the prison's history and contemporary justice issues, developing exhibits, audio stops, public programs, and social media projects. Annie has collaborated with academics, genealogists, front line interpreters, and museum visitors. Her research interests include race, class, gender, sexuality, cities, vice, crime, and morality. She loves telling the stories of those who history has largely forgotten.
