January Member Saturday: Dr. Martin Luther King Weekend

Join us as we kick off a weekend commemorating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and enjoy some exclusive member perks.

First, grab some complimentary coffee and donuts and chat with Sean Kelley, Senior Vice President, Director of Interpretation. Learn more about the history of Dr. Martin Luther King Weekend at Eastern State and discuss how Dr. King’s work remains resonant and relevant today. Then, receive priority seating for the 11:30 a.m. public reading of excerpts from “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and hear Dr. King’s words come to life. Members who RSVP will each receive a book of selected writings of Dr. Martin Luther King, including the entire text of this letter.

More about “Letter from Birmingham Jail”:

“I submit that an individual who breaks the law that conscience tells him is unjust, and willingly accepts the penalty by staying in jail in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the very highest respect for the law.” These words, written with a “contraband” pencil in the margins of a newspaper, are just one small piece of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”

On April 12, 1963, Dr. King was arrested in Birmingham, Alabama for demonstrating without a permit. The letter that he wrote during his 11 days in jail there became a manifesto for civil disobedience and helped advance the American civil rights movement. More than 50 years later, people across the world still reflect on Dr. King’s life, words, and actions.

This event is free for all members. Reserve free tickets online at www.EasternState.org/MemberSaturday or call 215-236-5111 x224. Space is limited.
