February 20, 2021, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Member Saturday: Past & Present | Women and Incarceration

Members only. Registration required.

Women are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. prison population, living within a prison system largely designed for men. Learn about how the history and legacy of Eastern State Penitentiary impacts the lives of incarcerated women today.

Join Lauren Zalut, Director of Education and Tour Programs, Damon McCool, Public Programming Specialist, and special guest Reverend Doctor Michelle Simmons, founder and CEO of Why Not Prosper. First, learn more about some of the nearly 1,000 women incarcerated at Eastern State. Then, consider the ongoing impact of incarceration on women today, including exceptional challenges as a result of COVID-19.

Reverend Doctor Michelle Simmons is a native Philadelphian who wears many hats in the Philadelphia criminal justice activism community. She is the founder and CEO of Why Not Prosper, a non-profit celebrating its 20th anniversary that empowers and supports women from prison systems during their reintegration into society. She is also the president of the steering committee of Philadelphia Lawyers for Social Equity, on the executive board of the City of Philadelphia's Community Advisory Council Criminal Justice Committee, and a mother and grandmother.
