Eastern State’s façade and revolutionary design have fascinated architects, criminologists, and visitors for almost 200 years, but lying just below the surface is a labyrinth of corridors, maintenance tunnels, and sewer lines, which are rarely seen by staff members or the public.

Join Sally Elk (President and CEO), Matt Murphy (Tour Programs Supervisor), and Liz Trumbull (Manager of Historic Preservation) as we descend into the depths of Eastern State Penitentiary to unearth the history of its underground foundations, the fascinating story of the maintenance tunnels, and what surprises we find when we dig beneath the surface today.
