Ribbon of Gold
A Project of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society
On the long terraces, which flank the front of the Eastern State Penitentiary, a wonderful border of woody shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennials thrives. This intriguing garden is truly an urban gem and is primarily maintained by volunteer efforts, all 8,000 square feet of it! The sun-soaked, south-facing location creates both a challenging and rewarding experience for its volunteer gardeners. There is always something to admire and learn from this garden. Not only do the plantings provide seasonal interest all year long but they also serve as a habitat for birds, bees and butterflies.
