2000: Cellblock 1 Link Roofing and Conservation
$335,000.
Status Complete!

Third roofing project removed the old metal roofing, evaluated the historic wooden roofing system, replacing deteriorated members, installed a new standing seam lead-coated copper roof, and conserved the historic plasters below. Illustrated the long-range goal of finishing the interior of the building a "stabilized ruin"

Because of the deteriorated condition of the Cellblock 1 link, this area was closed to the public in 1999, leaving Cellblock 1 with only one entrance. Although Cellblock 1 was stabilized in 1998, visitors were only allowed access to a small section of the block and the tour route had to be rerouted to avoid the Cellblock 1 link. With the completion of the Cellblock 1 stabilization in 2000, visitors were once again able to access the entire block.

Funded by: Pew Charitable Trusts Heritage Investment Program ($150,000), Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Keystone Historic Preservation Grant($100,000), City of Philadelphia ($70,000), and 1999 Halloween Fundraiser ($15,000).
