Many people overcome obstacles. Some people stumble in spite of advantages.

The overall pattern, however, is clear. Huge numbers of the men and women in U.S. prisons grew up in poverty, attended failing schools, and were exposed to trauma as children. More than half are Black or Latino.

The question is why? And how can we break these troubling patterns?
