Play It Forward
A man and a game.
Coach Herb Magee of Philadelphia University honors the legacy of Father Edwin Gallagher, his uncle and the most important man in his life.
Father Gallagher changed the course of Herb’s life. He also had a profound impact on the Eastern State Penitentiary inmate-artist whose religious paintings still intrigue many today.
Both men carried forward Father Gallagher’s influence in their lives and, in turn, brought out the best in others. Learn their stories…
- See where Herb played basketball against the inmates…
- Encounter the heartfelt murals, a little-known slice of Philadelphia Catholic history…
Enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the memorable setting where it all took place.

The Catholic Chaplain’s Office Murals:
Play it Forward benefits Eastern State’s 2013 Annual Appeal project: Conservation of the Catholic Chaplain’s Office Murals. This is the final phase of a larger preservation effort. Come summer, art conservators will begin the fragile conservation of the 23 remarkable murals painted by inmate Lester Smith. Learn more about Smith’s story of faith and his mentor, Father Edwin Gallagher, at easternstate.org/cco.
Sponsorship opportunities are available. Call (215) 236-5111 x17.
