Eastern State is the world’s first
true Penitentiary, a building designed to inspire penitence, or true
regret, in the hearts of criminals. More than three hundred prisons are
modeled after Eastern State’s distinctive wagon wheel floor plan.
The prison remained open for 142 years.
Visitors explore Eastern State with the "Voices of Eastern
State" Audio Tour, narrated by actor Steve Buscemi.
They see the luxurious cell where gangster Al Capone spent nine
months. They learn the fate of 12 inmates who attempted a daring
tunnel escape in 1945. And visitors hear first hand accounts of life
in the cellblocks from former officers and inmates. Eight critically
acclaimed art exhibits are also included with admission.
Many visitors take the daytime historic tour, have dinner in one of
the wonderful neighborhood
restaurants and stay in Fairmount for a fright-filled evening at Terror
Behind the Walls.
