A Rather Varied Group

Labor Day has come and gone, and many people are headed back to school. Here at ESP, that's not necessarily the case. People often ask us tour guides what we're studying, and I think they would be surprised to learn that some of us are done school and that all of us have at least one degree under our belt. Visitors often ask whether we're studying Corrections, Criminal Justice, or History. Actually, we're a rather varied group. Here's a list:

If you visit Eastern State this weekend you might notice some changes. Many museums have the luxury of building a visitor’s center from the ground up with spacious areas to house important visitor services like ticketing, restrooms and a gift shop. Here at Eastern State, our visitor center is housed in the penitentiary’s Administration Building.

TBTW Season Kickoff Event

On September 20, there will be a celebration on Fairmount Avenue as our Terror Behind the Walls box office officially opens and the gargoyles are installed on top of the penitentiary facade. There will be music, games, and even a few zombies on hand to entertain the season's first official ticket buyers. Get in line by 11:00 a.m.* to be eligible for great prizes!:

Not Your Average Bear

For the past 5 years, Eastern State Penitentiary has teamed up with Applehead Factory to make custom Teddy Scare dolls for Terror Behind the Walls. As a result of a chance meeting at a haunted house convention years ago, Applehead Factory Inc. and Eastern State have worked tirelessly each year to bring a new and different Teddy Scare to our biggest fans’ collections. As the one who has filled the online orders for the past three years, I can assure you that once these guys hit the web they start to FLY off the shelves.

During the past 20 years we’ve tried a lot of different things here at Terror Behind the Walls… a lot of times our changes were successful, but sometimes we learn from our mistakes. If you’ve read my past Tour Guide Chronicles, you know that we want Terror Behind the Walls to be a seamless entertainment experience from the moment our guests arrive at our Ghost Bus parking lot until the moment they head home for the evening.
